Update 08/24/2017  - The outpouring of support of all kind in the past 48 hours has been nothing short of incredible. It is a true testament of Klal Yisroel, and that we truly all consider ourselves one family. What started as a $100,000 goal was almost immediately moved to $250,000 as it became quickly clear that we would rapidly surpass it. Less than two days later it has become clear that that too would be surpassed. At this time the exact financial needs are unknown, what is known is that while we all hope that they will remain as minimal as possible, the sad fact is that it can easily end up being upwards of $500,000. Between being unable to work for an indeterminate amount of time, increased babysitting and cleaning needs, physical therapy expenses, medical bills, potential construction to the home until there is a complete refuah and much more, the monetary cost can be tremendous. While we further look into and try to anticipate the range of how much will be needed, we are temporarily moving the goal to a number of donors instead of a specific financial goal. The outpouring of support has been inspiring; you can't imagine what this means to the family, knowing how many people are supporting and praying for them.

This campaign is endorsed by Rabbi Boruch Hirschfeld, Rabbi Yakov Sonnenschein, and Rabbi Dovid Gross.  All donations and funds are being administered by leading members of the Cleveland Community including;  Yitz Frank, Tzvi Turner, Dovid Malcmacher, Heshy Neiman, Ben Chafetz, Aaron Sonnenschein and several others.

Dear Friends,

I am trying to write this letter while my keyboard is drowning in tears. I spent the day yesterday with Avrom and Michal Gruen, from Cleveland, at the Pittsburgh Children's Hospital; watching as they sat at their 7 year old daughter’s bedside for hours, begging and praying for her to wake up, even for an instant. One eye opened for a second, and there was a moment of relief, albeit for just a short moment. Just view Michal’s video and you’ll feel the same emotions I am experiencing.

The Gruen family is recovering from a terrible car accident early Friday morning.

Avrom was driving with 5 of their 6 children on Rt. 80 heading back to Cleveland, when they struck an overturned tractor-trailer that was lying across the highway in the dark.  They were first sent to a local hospital and then transported by the Med-Evac team to the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, due to the severity of their injuries.

One of the children has a laceration to the liver but is boruch H-shem up and responsive. Another has a broken leg and a broken jaw (has now been able to return home to the other siblings).  A third child is in serious and critical condition, and has had one surgery and will need more for the liver, pancreas, and diaphragm. And a fourth child has a very serious brain injury and we are hoping for the best.

Two of the children and the family have a long, hard road to recovery and will need help in many ways. Some expenses will be covered by insurance, much of it will not be. Outside of the medical expenses, the community is mobilizing and has hired an aid to assist with the children, while the parents are in the hospital with the girls.  Living expenses, child-care (including for the 4 month old baby), insurance, utilities, meals, and transportation must be covered to allow the parents to focus on being with the children that are in the hospital. Money must be raised to help in the road to recovery. WE NEED YOUR HELP! While the family did not wish to be a burden to klal, they finally agreed to allow us to help them through this painful ordeal.

Michal told me that she knows that this happened right before Rosh Chodesh Elul, so people would have something to help them realize how precious life is and how much our children mean to us. It is a reminder for all of us to undertake something that will help us be better, and in turn will be a zechus for a refua for her daughters.

The family survived an accident that according to science is impossible to explain how anyone could have lived.  We know that Hashem is the ultimate healer and miracle maker. We have to appeal to our father in heaven to continue the miracles he already started with the Gruen's and in the zechus of our tefillos and actions, may we merit to see a refua shelaima to:

UPDATES

UPDATE 08/22/2017 @19:00PM EDT

We just got a call from Shmuli Gruen, Avi Gruen's brother and the girls uncle. Avi has been by the children and involved with the Doctors and family NON STOP since Friday. Yesterday was the first day he stopped long enough to change his blood stained shirt. His brother called me a few hours ago and told me he finally was able to convince Avi to go the ER and get checked out. I just heard back and Avi has a fractured sternum and is being brought in for an CT Scan to check for other damage.

Please daven and say tehilim for Avraham Yisachar ben Chana Rachel.

Hadassah is having spinal surgery tomorrow, please daven that everything should be matzliach. (LEAH HADASSA BAS MICHAL CHANA)

UPDATE 08/22/2017 @20:48PM EDT

With the exception of the fractured sternum the CT scan for Avi was B"H clear.

The doctors are bringing in Chava right now for an MRI. please daven with all your hearts that everything should be progressing positively!

UPDATE 08/23/2017 @13:08PM EDT

Hadassah is still in surgey.  The Doctors said the surgery is off to a good start.

There has been tremendous progress with Chavala.  More details to come but the short of it is that her brain is starting to regulate some of her body functions and she is starting to react to external stimuli.

Please please keep on davening.

UPDATE 08/24/2017 @10:22AM EDT

Just a brief update on the TREMENDOUS amount of chesed that the communities in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and around the world are doing to help the family. Thousands of people have donated funds, and hundreds of people have volunteered. So many people, giving of themselves in major ways, making sure that no detail goes untouched.
Coordinating babysitting, arranging meals, buying school supplies for the kids at home, making sure mail (bills!) are responded to, arranging a car for the family, among everything else.
Just today, one of the girls requested an iPad to communicate with her friends, listen to music, etc. Like everything, it was a beautiful group effort, as one person bought it, one person loaded it with games, one person loaded it with music, and yet another drove it down to Pittsburgh. One fellow drove to Clarion, Pennsylvania to retrieve the family’s luggage.
Hundreds of volunteers have coordinated meals, packages, childcare, and travel. Thousands have davened. What a tremendous outpouring of achdus the Gruen family has caused. Please continue to HELP, DONATE, VOLUNTEER, and most importantly PRAY!
