"Eight ZAKA volunteers came straight off a 15 hour journey from Jerusalem to assist in the recovery and rehabilitation of the flood-ravaged city of Houston, post hurricane Harvey.
Working in full cooperation with the Orthodox Union which is coordinating the volunteer effort in the community, they immediately set to work on their first assignment - to inch their way through the synagogue, recover all holy items, remove the debris and pick away at the mold that is growing everywhere.
"Slowly but surely, we are managing to recover this area, but at this stage it looks like a total loss," noted ZAKA volunteer Josh Wander."
The full extent of the damage done to Texas by Hurricane Harvey is still being assessed. ZAKA are on the ground in Houston, weighing the damage, and doing all they can to help.
Now is a critical time: Families are returning to destroyed homes, schools, and shuls. ZAKA volunteers are in homes NOW, pulling out drywall, moving holy items to dry storage.
When disaster strikes, families who lost their homes don't have the time or strength to rebuild, clear the damage, and organize their belongings. ZAKA is there now, and they need to send more volunteers. They need our help IMMEDIATELY to fly more people out, who will continue this important work.
