Help Adin's Closet Fund Basic Clothing for Children
Adin's Closet was founded in 2012 around the time of the first Yahrtzeit of by darling brother Adin Yehuda Ben Shmuel Yosef. I wanted to start an organization in Adin's Honor. Along with the help of amazing women, Adin's Closet was born. The goal of the organization was to clothe needy children in Monsey. We saw right away what a huge demand there was. At first, the organization exclusively prepared packages of gently used clothing in excellent condition and distributed to the families based on the sizes of their children.
However, we soon began to realize that the packages of gently used clothing were not enough to meet the needs of these children. Certain basics are not so useful when pre-owned. We realized that the families we were helping are so limited with funds that they could not purchase wardrobe basics such as socks, yarmulkas, shells, tzitzits, and pajamas. We, therefore, decided we needed to raise money and supplement our packages with gift boxes that include those brand new items customized for each child! We now distribute these packages bi-yearly.
We constantly evolve our system to be more efficient. Now, almost 6 years later, the client base at Adin's Closet has grown tremendously. Accordingly, our showroom (where volunteers sort through our pre-owned clothing and " shop" for the families) has undergone a major renovation to meet the demands of an efficient system. We also now require a much larger budget since we are now servicing more than 200 children! We are therefore asking for help to ensure that each child receives their package of new basics that accompanies their box of pre-owned wardrobe. We purchase the items at wholesale or close to wholesale prices. Please help us help these children.
It is so comforting to my family that Adin's legacy lives on. Adin impacted countless individuals during his short life. So many people have told me that It took a long time to get used to not saying the name "Adin Yehuda Ben Orna" during davening. People who knew him loved him. Adin was the most lovable toddler. His accident was absolutely devastating to our family and the Toronto community at large. After the accident, the Toronto community showed an outpouring of love. Adin was an extraordinary boy. It was incredible how a boy who didn't speak or walk was able to impact so many lives during his lifetime. In honor of his bar mitzvah, my parents' friends took it upon themselves to ensure the mitzvah of tefillin, a mitzvah he couldn't fulfill himself, would be fulfilled by countless others who would otherwise not don tefillin. It was a campaign that successfully influenced hundreds of unaffiliated men to put on tefillin.
During Adin's life, he had a tremendous impact on so many individuals. This is why, after his passing, I wanted to ensure that he continues to touch the lives of all those who hear his name. From the givers to the receivers, Adin continues to profoundly affect the lives of countless people. I have shared this incredible video my sister Rachel created in his honor. The video tells his story. There is a segment where I discuss Adin's Closet. The video illustrates how Adin represents a portrait of courage. I am so proud to have known him. I miss him every day.
